Ninth Generation

112. Wade Hampton Darnell3 was born on 28 Jun 1882 in Grayson County, Virginia. He died on 11 Dec 1967 in Tuckerdale, Virginia. He was buried in Bauguess Cemetery, Ashe County, North Carolina. On Oct. 16, 1907, Wade Hampton Darnell, age 25, married Frances Malissia Caudill, age 25, at the home of Thomas J. Bauguess, Malissia's uncle, on the Big Windfall Road by Rev. William Brooks, also Malissia's uncle. Witnesses were Thomas Bauguess, E.G. Francis, & Minnie Bauguess.
Wade, born June 28, 1882 in Grayson Co., Va, was the son of Lewis & Margaret Peak Darnell and was 1/8 Cherokee being a descendant of the Cherokee Indian, New Sizemore. Malissa, born Jan. 27, 1882 on Big Windfall Road, Ashe Co., was the daughter of Henry and Lydia Bauguess Caudill.
The first farm that Wade & Malissia owned was on the Bee Tre Rd. above Union Baptist Church. Both daughters were born there: Martha Lillian and Blannie Mae. Wade worked for other farmers while at this location. Malissia tended the garden, raised chickens & hogs, and milked cows in addition to caring for the children and managing the house. She was renown for her beautifully designed handmade quilts.
Wade refused to go to the coal mines in West Va. to work as several of his brothers had done. He had worked in timber and on the railroad in Mtn. City, Tenn. prior to his marriage; therefore, when the opportunity arose to help construct the Abington branch of the Virginia-Carolina Railroad Co. into Ashe Co. (this was bought later by Norfolk & Western Railroad Co about 1918), Wade quickly seized it. The railroad was completed to Tuckerdale in 1914. Wade continued employment with Norfolk & Western until his retirement in 1950. He had been a relief foreman for many years with the Norfolk & Western Line before becoming the foreman of the West Jefferson section. He held this position until he received an injury while unloading cross-ties. In building and maintaining the railroad, all work was done manually. Wade remembered working for 3 straight weeks in the water building the trestles. He was also a trackwalker for three years, repairing the track over an 18 mile trek. Wade had been involved in several accidents on the motorcar during his time with the railroad. One time the men jumped the car to avoid being hit by the oncoming train, demolishing all of the men's dinner buckets except Wade's. He divided his dinner with the others including his unbroken glass of berries.
Purchasing another small farm from Thomas Bauguess which was located on Big Windfall Creek, a short distance from Tuckerdale; Wade & Malissia sold their farm on Bee Tree Rd. and moved. They lived here for many years. Then they sold it to buy another farm from Harrison Tucker about 1 mile from Tuckerdale on the Big Windfall Rd. Sam Caudill was the carpenter who built their new home, with the help of Sam's son Oscar, Avery Darnell, and Davey Darnell. The house had eight rooms, and upstairs, columned porch, & accented by a hedge. The Spring water was renown for its good taste by all the neighbors. Wade & Malissia continued living here until their deaths. Malissia died June 8, 1934, and Wade, Dec. 11, 1967.
Malissia had been well-trained by her mother Lydia B. Caudill in house management. Her handwork was outstanding: she crocheted lace for scarfs and tablecloths, ahe made fringe which she appled to clothing & bedspreads, she tufted bedspreads also, she pieced quilts, and she handmade their clothes. She was an excellent cook. Jellies, maple syrup, apple butter, pies, and stack cakes were her specialities.
Wade and Malissia's lives were marked by their complete faith in God. Malissie professed faith in God at age 13, joining Old Apple Grove Ch., organized in Patterson Graham's apple orchard. Due to distance, Apple Grove was split into New Apple Grove Bapt. Ch. on Hurricane and Windfall Bapt. Ch. on Big Windfall Rd. After the decline of Windfall Ch., Tuckerdale Mission Bapt. Ch. was organized in 1915 with Malissia and her mother being charter members. Her life-time dedication to the church included: Sunday School teacher, Church Secretary, & a Deacon's Wife - Communion items. Wade was a member and deacon of Tuckerdale Bapt. Ch. for more than 50 yrs., being among the first baptised in 1916 & ordained deacon - Aug. that year.
