49. William "Surry Bill" Darnall1 was born on 13 Aug 1785. He died on 23 Jul 1870. The following history was taken from the memory of Rev. C. F. Fields. It was dated 1 February 1934, Wilkes Co., NC.
"William Darnell (known as Fat Billy) was the father of Toliver Darnell, and lived near a spring across the branch from where Toliver Darnell lived, and where Frank (his son) now lives. This is about 1/2 mile south of Coolspring Church, on Long Branch, Edwards Township, Wilkes County, North Carolina. Dates of death unknown.
William Darnell married Betty Gentry, both are buried in Pines West of homeplace on top of hill. Wm. Darnell gave the land upon which the first church was built (Coolspring) near the spring now used and where a part of the graveyard is, which was the first graves there, made after the organization of the church in 1805. The next church was built on the side of the hill about 100 yards north. Later the present church was built on top of the hill.
"John Darnell was the father of William Darnell (Fat Billy) and had a son by the name of John that moved in his young manhood to Indiana, who married a Fields in NC. John Darnell (father of Fat Billy) wife's name unknown, also had a son named William who also lived in Indiana and was a Methodist preacher. He also had a son named James, who is the father of Houston (now living) and lived on Long Branch 1/4 mile north of old homeplace. Toliver Darnell, the son of Fat Billy, had five sons, Josephus, Roof, Alex, George, and Frank, all living at this time except Roof, who was killed accidently while in the service of the U.S. in Montana. He married Sarah Emma Elizabeth Harp. There were two daughters, Sally Ann and Dillie, also living.
"There was a William Darnell that was known as Surry Bill, who married a Wood. Had two sons, Peter and Wade, who married sisters, the daughters of Joshua Couch. Wade married Nancy and Peter married Sally. Joshua Couch married an Edwards. Also has a son named Joshua. Surry Bill had a daughter Mary who married a Settle [However, she was in the household of her brother Wade H., in Wilkes Co., NC, on both the 1880 and 1890 Census, shown as unmarried?? MED], who had a daughter called "Pop" a cripple, and lived near the spring on lands now owned by J. W. Darnell, and known as the John Harp place. Surry Bill had a daughter who married a Lomax [possibly Lomach - see children's names. MED], the father of Dennis and Berry [Pinkney Asbury - MED] Lomax, recently deceased."

William "Surry Bill" Darnall and Elizabeth "Betty" Wood were married on 11 Oct 1810. Elizabeth "Betty" Wood1 was born on 13 Aug 1785 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. She died on 23 Jul 1870 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Born 13 August 1785 in Wilkes Co., NC; died 23 July 1870. The wife was on the 1880 Census of Wilkes Co., in the household of her son Wade H., giving her age as 95. In the remarks column the censustaker had written "infirm.' The Darnall, Darnell Family Volume 2 Avlyn Dodd Conley Gateway Press, Inc. Baltimore 1979 William "Surry Bill" Darnall and Elizabeth "Betty" Wood had the following children:

Mary Darnall was born in Jan 1830. Rev. Fields stated that this Mary had married to a Settle, however, she was in the household of her brother Wade H., in Wilkes Co., NC, on both the 1880 and 1890 Census, shown as unmarried.
