13. Isaac Darnall¹ was born about 1729. Born circa 1729, there being no record by which to determine the exact date; merely the sequence of brothers named by his brother Morgan in his nuncupative will. This will indicated that Isaac may have been a resident of "the Carolinas in 1765." Definately, he was a resident of Rowan County, North Carolina, when Surry County was formed from Rowan in 1770.
When Wilkes County was formed from Surry in 1778, he was a resident of Wilkes County. After his death, the first census of the US in 1790 listed a Nancy Darnell with 3 males over 16 years of age, and 4 males under 16; no females mentioned and poses a problem since Nancy should have been counted. Traditionally, there were nine sons and no daughter. However, John had died in battle and Cornelius was listed on the 1790 Census with 1 male over 16 (himself); 2 males under 16 and 2 females. What became of the other seven is anyone's guess. Probably they account for the innumerable Darnells in that area, whom we have been unable to assign any connection or line of descent.
The definite data possessed is shown by the filing for grants of land by both Isaac and "Captain" John on 7 July 1779. John's entry was issued on 25 March 1780; Isaac being chain carrier on the survey. Isaac's grant was for 240 acres adjoining John's grant on both sides of Fishing Creek, as Grant No. 428, entry 673, Bk. 49, p. 151, entered 7 July 1779, but not issued until 23 October 1782, some 16 months after the death of "Capt." John. The last record of Isaac was his inclusion on the tax lists of Wilkes County in 185. This was on only 100 acres of the original 240 acres. This ends the documentary record of Isaac Darnell as found to date.
Nearly all of the Darnalls changed the spelling of the name to Darnell after they moved into the southern states. The names of only three sons of Isaac are logically determined.
